background

Former Excelsior Springs Mayor Carolyn Schutte experienced brain damage in 2011 after an allergic reaction to an immunization shot before an international trip. Carolyn was a great leader for the city and many civic organizations. As the mayor, Carolyn helped improve the city through various efforts with her unique brand of leadership. Carolyn was an integral part of several city boards and non-profits throughout the city. Carolyn was an inspiration to many. Carolyn, now bed-ridden, lives at her home with her husband Jim.
The Downtown Excelsior Partnership (DEP) through a partnership with Bross and Spidle Funeral Home created a downtown pocket park at the corner of Broadway and Marietta Street. This park will serve as a venue for movies, concerts, yoga and many other events in downtown Excelsior Springs. DEP began renovating the site in the summer of 2013 - the 1st Phase to include preparing the site, planting trees and grass, and adding a sidewalk through the park.
In 2014, a small group of Carolyn's closest friends, nicknamed the Posse by Carolyn herself, took over the 2nd Phase of the park renovation - the addition of a stage, water feature, flag pole and other accessories. This is truly a community project with Rotary, the Excelsior Springs Park and Recreation department and many others will see it through to a dedication in 2015.
To finish the park, bricks are being sold to line the sidewalk in the park. You can donate through a brick purchase to honor Carolyn for her dedication to her city or maybe you want to honor a family member or friend. The park is a dedication to those in our life that we think are pretty special.

Waterfeature
Excelsior Springs has a rich history of mineral water and it would only be fitting to add a water feature to the park. One of Carolyn's favorite water features was an urn at Earnest Hemingway's Key West home.
Flagpole
Carolyn has a great love for her country and a flagpole in the park would be very fitting.
Park benches, monument sign and trashcans
The park will need these accessories to be fully functional.

help finish the park
Help us finish the park. Carolyn is a huge fan of the park system in Excelsior Springs and she has enjoyed getting updates on the progress of this park. Carolyn enjoyed getting the people involved in Excelsior Springs, a city she loves. This park has been a community effort so far with many individuals and companies helping with the preparation of the site, pouring of concrete and planting of trees/shurbs.
This project needs your help and involvement to move into Phase Two. How can you help? Bricks are being sold to help fund this phase - approximately $30,000 is needed to finish the park. You can purchase a brick with a message in honor of someone or send a message to Carolyn. Bricks come in two sizes - the traditional size for $75 and a double brick for $150. There is a limited number of bricks so don't delay in getting yours. Click on this link for more information.

You can email the Posse if you have any questions or would like to help with a certain portion of the park.
